Where to even start when you want to start a business.

Ever had a goal or vision that your so excited about starting.. then when it actually comes the time to act you simply just don’t have the motivation to get moving?

We tend to spend more time thinking about getting started then the time it actually takes to start!

Whether it’d be a dream, a development or passion of ours, more regularly than not, our brains tend to filter out the positives and immediately magnify all the little negative details, which in turn prevent us from continuing. Many of us fall into the trap and overgeneralize, jumping to a conclusion based on a single negative incident, thought or experience and we immediate abandon ship.

The fear of not being good enough is one of the deepest most common fears every human being deals with at some point or another.  Self-doubt is real – it’s human nature, and it’s oftentimes ingrained in our minds.

So…how can we overcome this?

It’s important to remember that we have a mind, but we are not our minds, even though we think we are.  We have the power to achieve the greatest level of ourselves, the power to reach our greatest dreams, and the power to get started and complete whatever we set out to do in life.  Don’t believe me and need a kick in the butt? Furthermore, allow me to introduce you to 4 tips to START and run your business and some useful strategies to consider when you’re just starting out.

(Disclaimer: These tips are more so suitable for service based businesses, which I have the most experience working with!)

1. You have to really want it.

Whatever goal, dream, aspiration you have.  YOU have to want it.   Not what your boss, parent, partner or friend wants of you.  You personally have to have passion for that something, and it needs to set your heart on fire. 

Our desire system is flawed and many of us tend to desire things because others desire them, we find out what we don’t want after we get what we thought we wanted and tend to want instant gratification. 

Not sure what your passion is? Don’t fret, so many of us don’t even know.  It takes time to figure out, years, and in fact, we need to stop obsessing about finding our passion and realize passion building is a discovery process…we need to be patient!

2. Once you have that desire to build a business, start!

When you run your own business, you are continuously learning as you go.  If you wait until you are “comfortable enough”, you’ll miss all the opportunities!

The best place to start is to try to become as educated as you can in your field.  Read, research, study and continually educate yourself.  As you learn more, you’ll begin to come up with all sorts of incredible ideas for your business. 

Pro-Tip: Why not reverse engineer the process? Reach out to already qualified experts in your field you look up to, and ask if you can take them out for a coffee to pick their brain and ask questions about what they do or how they got started! You’d be surprised how many people are willing to help out other aspiring entrepreneurs. (cough cough – this is what I did!)

Starting is powerful! It primes us to take advantage of every opportunity as it comes, build that portfolio of experience and each small step we take will bring us that much closer to our goals.

When I first started building my business, I spent hours and hours learning online.  I was actually astonished at the amount of information on how to start a business is literally at our finger tips.  The fact that you can learn all the “in’s and outs” of your specific industry, oftentimes for free!? It’s really too good to be true.

3. Build your clientele.

Let’s face it.  It’s hard to get clients when you are a newbie in the entrepreneurial scene.

The solution to that? We recommend starting by offering your services for free or a special rate to close friends and family (people that likely will work with you before you are out in the public).

There is power in word-of-mouth marketing and if you’ve been focusing on perfecting your skills and growing your business, this can benefit you in so many ways.

In fact, that’s exactly how I started to grow my business!

4. Grow as you go.

As your business begins to grow and you start serving more and more clients, you’ll then need to continue building and growing your business. 

Setting up strong marketing strategies, mapping out business development goals and workflow systems to developing strong legal documentation to protect yourself are a few of the many items you need to consider when running your own business. 

Through experience and exposure to the work, you will begin to learn what’s working, what’s not and what you can improve on.  It all happens in baby steps, and we promise with time and dedication, you’ll be looking back and wishing you would have started sooner!
